| - *** NEVER, EVER, EVER go here. ***
Two dead dogs and part of the blame on these people.
My dog had an obstruction and needed surgery pronto. I was out of town the week she got sick and my family didn't notice anything wrong with her. When I got home, she looked horrible. Wouldn't eat, wouldn't even drink water. She looked like she was in pain from drinking water alone. She was still wagging her tail, but she wasn't playing with her toys or anything. I was always into animals as a kid and grew up wanting to be some sort of vet. I knew she had an obstruction. I was in highschool and didn't have the money for surgery, so I had to convince my parents to call a vet's office. They were all closed by the time we called. As soon as we were able, we called around again and Horizon was the first place to tell us they could take her in (I thought animal emergencies were treated in a timely manner EVERYwhere, but apparently animals aren't nearly as important as humans). Then they said they had to re-schedule for a later date. MY DOG WAS DYING! They scheduled her for a Friday afternoon. I got home the Sunday before that. By the time Thursday rolled around, she was passing blood. I was horrified. I wish I could've given her surgery myself.
It was Friday morning and my dad was up early leaving for work. I was going to get up soon after he left to get ready for school. Both of my dogs were in their dog house when my dad went to pet Ginger and tell her everything would be okay because she was going to the vet as soon as he got home. He put his hand under her head to pet her and her whole body came up. Way to wake up. If she had been in there as scheduled, she'd still be alive.
Anyway, after dealing with the death of my dog that morning, we decided to take my other dog in her place for a check-up. He was 14, but he was my first pet. We found out he had an enlarged heart, which was apparently normal. Nothing else was wrong, really. He was 14 and they wanted us to spend hundreds of dollars on having his teeth cleaned, but they guessed he was half his age by looking at his teeth (I brushed them). They REALLY wanted our money. Almost a year later he started coughing all the time. It wasn't kennel cough, I believe his lungs were being affected by his heart. Then one morning he lost control of his organs and started breathing heavily. He had a stroke, and continued having them here and there for months. He would just fall over sideways, shake, get back up. It was terrifying and I hated being alone with him. He was put in the clinic overnight a few times. They pumped him full of Rimadyl and other crap. That was supposed to help him? I fell asleep with him in his bed right next to mine every night, wondering if he was going to be alive in the morning. I never slept through the night. I constantly woke up to see if he was still breathing. Sometimes I fell asleep with my hand hanging off the bed, resting on his torso - to feel him moving.
I couldn't take it. He was 15 and he had trouble remembering who we were. I made an appointment to put him down after I got home from school.
Dudley doesn't let you in the room when he injects them.
My dog was so drugged that he didn't even know who we were the day we put him down.
We paid that day in the office and signed papers to have him cremated. They said the whole process would take about 2 weeks and they take a bit of his hair and put his paw print on a professionally printed poem. There was a sample picture of everything and it looked nice.
2 weeks rolls around. No word.
3 weeks...
4...
My mom called, furious, wondering what the HELL was going on. A few days later we get a call from their office saying they made a huge mistake. They never let the pet cremation company (contractors) know we already paid for the service BEFORE my dog was even put to sleep, because they had no record that we did. So my mom went down to the cremation office and had to identify my dog and show a receipt. HE WAS IN THE FREEZER FOR A MONTH.
Then we get the poem/paw print. They did it on a notecard in their office with some ink and handwrote a note. Someone's fingerprints were all over the paper in black ink. And his hair was on the notecard with a little piece of scotch tape.
I want to say it took around 5 weeks to get my dog back in a wooden box.
By the way, I dare you to drive by the office at night. Usually the blinds are open on the corner office and Dudley just sits there on the phone (or not) - doing nothing.
You're paying top dollar for "quality care," and animals are family. You should get excellent service and if your pet is there for overnight surveillance they should PROBABLY BE TAKING CARE OF THEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE DYING.
