  • Yes, I was well aware that Arizona has taken a tough stance on illegal immigrants. But... tourists as well? Do they just not want any outsiders at all? I'm not going to complain about the weather. Actually, even though it was 100 degrees in early August when my friend and I went, it wasn't humid which made it slightly more bearable. Nor will I complain about the new controversial illegal immigrant law SB 1070. It's not SB 1070 that bothers me but the treatment we received which I believe was a result of the law. Case in point with the police officers (everybody's favorite). We approached two officers to ask for directions. They told us that they had other things to do and redirected us to a hotel. In that hotel, the lady at the front desk wanted to know if we were guests of the hotel and once she found out that we weren't, she told us that she couldn't help us. Now I realize that as an out-of-towner, my taxes don't pay these Phoenix cops' salaries, but are they really so busy looking for illegal immigrants that they can't help a lost tourist? And a hotel worker can't give tourists the time of day either? Thanks. Also the Motel 6 where I stayed ID'ed me. No other Motel 6 in the different places we stayed (Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, El Paso, and San Diego) asked for my ID because it was my friend who was paying. Nope, this place and others in the Phoenix area now require identification from ALL guests. New law, they told me, although they couldn't specify which law. And then they took a photocopy of my California driver's license and told me that only the police will get this record of me, as the "Phoenix police are trying to clean up the city a bit." Ummmm, since they're intent on cleaning up the city and I gave them an out-of-state ID, do they have the tools handy to check my ID to make sure it's real? I'm sure many illegals have fake IDs, probably out-of-state. I don't fault the motel for this, rather the City of Phoenix because it's a new city law. Is Big Brother watching me in Phoenix now? I'm sorry to get political on Yelp, but I will say regarding SB 1070, do what you will with the illegals since they don't have the legal right to be here. However, it is punitive to scrutinize legal residents and citizens in the quest to exile them. If the cops had been more helpful and the law not so strict on ID, I might have had an enjoyable time in Phoenix.
