  • Root beer on tap, swank red pendants and a coal-fired oven that cooks at 1,000 degrees. Combine these things with a vibrantly lit arch framing the kitchen door and you'll agree the corner of Camelback and 40th just got lucky. I joined friends for the soft opening tonight and was highly impressed by the service, cocktails, food and the super nice owners (Allen and George) that checked on us throughout the course of the evening. I can only imagine by next Friday when they are ready for their Grand Opening they're going to make a good impression on the Valley. Did you know the Martini was first made in 1863? The Grind bartender does. In fact the cocktails are classic and even feature the year next to the name. Although the Blueberry Hill (2010) is new school and delicious with Absolut Berri Acai, Funkin Blueberry, lime, agave nectar, fresh mint and soda water. We started with the rosemary roasted cheese with strawberry relish and croutons. Yum. Follow that with the sweet and spicy burger (with candied jalapenos, fried ratatouille, watercress and roasted garlic aioli), market fish sandwich (crispy peppers, roasted garlic, almonds, tapenade and watercress) and a side of roasted sweet potato fritters (loved them) and duck fat country fries with Wisconsin parmesan. I'll call my favorites. Hands down the sweet & spicy burger and sweet potato fritters. A winning combo that paired perfectly my Cable Car (1996) cocktail. Although the friends might stake claim in the chocolate bread pudding with bourbon and hand crafted milk shakes. One may wonder if this is just another burger place in the Valley - but I would argue The Grind is definitely "1,000° of separation."
