I was transferred to UMC by another hospital on a Saturday night about 11 pm based on the nature of my injury. I've only been in Vegas a few years so all I knew of UMC was their reputation for being the trauma hospital. I ended up staying there for 3 days.
The Good:
The Trauma Center staff-If I was rating the based on this staff alone I would give them the highest rating it wouldn't even be sufficient. They are caring and relentless in patient care. They are overworked, under staffed, overcrowded with patients, and yet I trusted them completely because I never once felt forgotten. In the midst of all the craziness the one trauma doctor took the time to convince me to alllow the hospital to run tests to figure out what causes my accidents. I had all but given up ever getting answers. Without his encouragement I wouldn't be finally properly diagnosed (after 23 years). Even though I didn't get my answers here I am forever grateful. This department is fine example of how doctors and nurses should be.
The Bad:
Overcrowding of patients- I was in the trauma department on a Saturday night. It was a busy night in Vegas because many serious traffic accidents and shooting victims came in. The non life threatening injuries (myself and 2 other patients) were kept in the hallway. I was there for about 5 hours. The gurney behind me was someone that was driving in a dui car accident. He screamed, kicked my gurney, & was an all around horrible person for the entire time. The staff kept moving his gurney and mine but the drunkard thought he was going to somehow escape the police officers there for him that were 5 feet away. The trauma department is much too small for the volume of patients that they see.
The Ugly:
Broken equipment-
I was placed in a broken bed once admitted. I was there for a head, neck, & back injury. The pressure caused by laying flat was excruciating. I alerted a nurse within 2 minutes of getting in my room. It took 6 hours for it to be replaced. I asked at least 10 times and to various staff members. I was crying from the pain. I was refused to be switched rooms and denied a transport bed until I could get a working one. There is no excuse for it to take this long with spare working beds available in the same department.
*Honorable mention for ugly treatment goes to the CNA that placed a blood pressure cuff over my iv blowing out the vein.
The doctors assigned to the patients once admitted- The difference in care from the trauma department was astounding. I can't believe this is even the same hospital. In the 3 days I was there, I spent less than 5 minutes total with those doctors. I got no answers. They never discussed the results of any of very involved and expensive tests that they ran. They didn't run all the tests that were actually ordered by the trauma doctor. Following a test on the third day my nurse comes in and announced I was discharged and I need to go immediately. Again, I got no diagnosis and NO ONE gave me any test results. I explained it to the nurse as well as the woman that discharged me. I asked for the doctor but was told they weren't available and I could call them later or get my information from the website. I left and a few days later got to see the doctors notes online. The doctor falsified her statement and claimed she spent 45 minutes with me one day. Was she at lunch? Napping? Falsifying time to scam more money on billing? I was disgusting that a medical professional would lie especially after such lackluster care.
