Atmosphere: A
I love it at McFate's. It just feels so nice and cozy. The bar area is super cool, and we always love sitting at the hightop tables or out on the patio. It definitely has a low-key vibe, and the brick oven always adds a nice warmth and is a visual plus.
Cleanliness: A
Easy. Not much to complain about here. Nice and clean.
Service: B+
We've been to McFate's Tap & Barrel a few times before, and service has always been awesome. This particular experience didn't match our previous visits unfortunately. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Not memorable at all. Our server was a girl who didn't even bother mentioning her name, and also didn't smile once. I work in the F&B industry as a manager myself - most of my job is literally to smile and ensure people feel welcome and comfortable. Smiling is always something that should happen during a dining/drinking experience. Just didn't happen this time. On another note, she was able to snag us a few leftover gingerbread man cookies from last night's event! That was a nice touch :)
Food: B+
Food is solid. "The Jess" is a killer combo of pizza ingredients, and the pizzas are cooked well in their brick oven. In a previous visit, I also tried the Caesar Verde - a caesar salad with some pesto added to it - and it was super tasty. I like how simple they keep their food menu. It's a great way to keep customers happy (and full) while being able to relax and enjoy the true star... the BEER!
Beer: A
My first time going to McFate's I actually wasn't too impressed with the beer. I did a flight of a few random ones, and they were just OK. But then...
Then I stopped by once and got the Candy Bar Milk Stout.
And it changed everything.
I'm a huge fan of all things dark beer, and the Candy Bar Milk Stout is absolutely outstanding. Perfectly sweet, with salty, nutty and chocolate notes. It just doesn't get much better. One of my favorite sweet stouts is White Russian Stout by SunUp, and the Candy Bar Milk Stout is right up there with it. Totally killer.
Sorry - I guess I kind of got off-top for this particular visit. Because the Candy Bar Milk Stout is no longer being brewed right now, I went with the gingerbread stout (one of my servers told me earlier today how fantastic it was, so choosing it was a no-brainer). The gingerbread stout was definitely a good stout, especially for the holidays. In my book it's not quite as tasty as the almighty Candy Bar Milk Stout, but again - still a solid beer for sure.
Creativity: B+
The only way I give an establishment an "A" for creativity is if they do something totally crazy, and that's not McFate's. They are solid all the way around, and while their seasonal beers are definitely unique and delicious - they aren't anything completely nuts. Which honestly, can sometimes be a good thing. McFate's is consistent and dependable.
