| - I LOVE greasy spoon diners, the dirtier and greasier, the better. I was excited to try Badger Cafe after hearing such glowing recommendations from locals. Boy, they were so wrong! The place has the dive vibe just right, with an old school interior, cheap prices, and a location in a strip mall, but the food here is really bad.
I visited with two friends and the three of us ate lunch for around $25 total. It's cheap, but the old adage is true: you get what you pay for. We ordered the fried zucchini, a pastrami sandwich without the bread, and a bacon cheeseburger without the bread. All three items were of an extremely poor quality. But then again, I didn't have to pay much for the food.
The fried food (fried zucchini and french fries) was the best thing we had, but that's not saying much. It tasted like frozen, mass produced zucchini that was simply dumped in the fryer. There's nothing wrong with that, but don't come in here expecting fresh, hand-cut zucchini. The french fries were freaking amazing, but it's hard to mess up fries! They were those super duper crispy, double-battered and fried fries, and they are amazing. That's the only thing I'd ever come back to eat here (but again, they are obviously frozen and straight from a bag).
The pastrami sandwich didn't fare as well. The pastrami was okay but bland, and the cheese on top wasn't real cheese and instead was processed cheese food. So gross. The cheeseburger was the absolute worst thing on the table. Once I got through the decent toppings (bacon and grilled onions), I hit the fake cheese and then the "beef." This beef was totally a FROZEN preformed patty, like those kind that come from the giant tube. The meat was of questionable quality and had the consistency of a hockey puck. It was so terrible. I love cheeseburgers and eat them every week and this one was one of the WORST I have EVER been served ANYWHERE in the world.
The cole slaw side was super sweet and -- you guessed it -- straight from a bulk food service pail. I get that restaurants can't always make homemade food, but everything we were served was straight off the Sysco delivery truck.
At least it was super cheap.
