  • I recently visited the beautiful, well-maintained litter-free campus to celebrate my 30-year alumnus mark: Class of '87 ;) I navigated pretty much the entire campus wearing my trusty Converse sneakers and enjoyed the hospitality. Of course, being that this is Arizona, sooo much has evolved with the remodeling, revamping, and addition of the (modern- too modern) buildings since I left the campus in 1987. There is now a food court look into/outside the former general dining at the ("memorial") student union. That small ice cream parlor is gone, with the partition wall knocked out and with the stairwell covered up. Of course, there is a Starbucks. I am appreciative that the older buildings with a much more intricate architectural marvel are still standing and being respectfully preserved. It still bugs me when some areas are under construction mainly to build something...just more or extras- usually what we don't need, it's not like the water pipe broke; thus, influencing those skyrocketing tuition and other school fees. I was a student on a grant, scholarship, and small (subsidized from bank) student loan and commuted by city bus (oh, how nice if the light rail existed) to / from my north-central Phoenix apartment and never lived in a dorm (only @ NAU previous to attending ASU), and I was treated well then, just like recently. Of course, if there were more money, I'd attend a different university out of state that's not so driven by research, Greek life, sports, and parties like ASU has been. It can be embarrassing that ASU has been on some "Top 10 party colleges" list or regarded as a "football school!" :( The good news is that the school focuses heavily on science and art- and science is a very important subject, right? The job market in science is still commendable... ASU is pretty much the "go-to" choice of college if you lived in Phoenix in general, so the options were limited if you were especially on financial aid or didn't come from wealthy parents. Being that ASU is located in Tempe with the revamped trendy Mill Ave strip and beach park nearby, there is something to do off campus that is safe to walk around in during the daytime and even nighttime with a group. Again, being that this is Arizona, any choice associated with living in Arizona (whether by choice or not) constitutes the "lower-level" of whatever you choose to do with a business located in this state i.e. education, employment, even social life. Even thought college represents higher education leading towards a decent or better future, it's still a business that makes money Only you can decide who deserves your money or time. Remember, cheaper is what you get- you want more or better, choose elsewhere. No or lack of funds? Find 'em! I did (at age 18)! Just so you know: go to college, learn something, study hard, graduate, don't fool around, and make something of yourselves the way you desire since childhood- college doesn't really make you smart or smarter, only you can do it! Don't let being stuck attending ASU get you down, just be glad you got accepted into college and maybe even managed to graduate with a degree and find your dream job. Just go for it- and, keep going and looking forward :) Lots of past alumni have found success after ASU, namely purse designer Kate Spade ;) (And, I am very happy the campus is entirely tobacco-free ;) ) The only thing I wish for back then is the internet(!) Good luck! (And, happy spring break week.)
