This place is cool for a one time visit. You at least need to check out the place. In my opinion, return trips aren't needed. They did have a blanket/towel laying on one of the chairs. It said 'Frank Lloyd Wright wasn't always right'. I love that. I'll save my Frank Lloyd Wright rant for a future review.
The cost of admission is 10 dollars(CASH ONLY). The tours loop so when you get there, you join a group that's already on their tour. With each new section of the tour, there are people joining and leaving so in some sections you hear a repeat of some of the same information. That's fine. I actually like this loop method of giving tours. It seems to be an efficient way of doing things.
I do love odd things and this is definitely one of those destinations. Some guy left his family nearly a century ago, moved to the desert, and started building this house aka castle. He gathered materials from junkyards and whatever he could find for free. It's interesting to see some of his ingenuity... for example, you can't cut down a saguaro cactus in Arizona. What did he do? He built a room around one. In that room now? The skeleton of a dead saguaro cactus. There was some other bit about how in the 15 years while he was building, he continued to dig so that he could be considered a mining operation and get the land for free from the city. There are all kinds of quirks in this house like that.
There is a well on top of the castle that leads down to the bar. Apparently, you could yell down the well the drink you wanted and someone would send it up.
I couldn't help but feel like something was missing from this story. It felt like there was something purposely being hidden.
I haven't even touched on how he left this house to his family and they moved in after he died. His family had a bit of a hoarding problem so the house is filled with their hoarding obsessions. The last relative that lived in the house died in 2010.
Again, I just felt like there was more to this story that could've been told. Sure. These tour guides might not have anything to do with the family but there has to be more to the story.
I won't spoil everything for you but if you want something a little different, go here.
