  • The people who work there are nice and friendly. The T-shirt was a cute idea. But .. I think I'm being very generous by giving them three stars: I don't think they're "A-OK", so much as "eh.. they're .. ok.. I guess." And I've definitely "had better": for starters, MJ in Pineville (the apple fritter alone at MJ is worth the trip). Donut Man in Glendora, CA, is orders of magnitude better than DK (there must be dozens of shops in LA County that have better donuts than DK; there just isn't the competition here). I've been to Donut King about 5-6 times, gotten about 10-15 donuts there; and I keep hoping my mind will change, that I'll eat a really good donut from there. It hasn't happened yet. Maybe I'm getting the wrong ones (the maple bacon is beyond nasty -- big chewy bacos), but they've tended to be 1) too complicated 2) toppings too sweet 3) not fresh Too many toppings... they overpower the base (is it really necessary to have caramel topping, and chocolate topping, and apple-goo filling, and peanuts on top?) Maybe it's better if you get there within an hour of them getting out of the oven. Their posted hours say they close at 3pm; today, I was there at 10:30am, the racks were at least 70% empty. Why not officially close at 12pm? Personally, I'd prefer less candy-like topping, less goo -- more in the way of lighter glazes or jam filling made with fresh fruit. Simplify. But, obviously, tastes differ. I can't find the "NYT" article mentioning DK that another reviewer cites, and I'm concerned that several of the "unrecommended" reviews appear to be earnest.
