  • Overpriced. Last year we lost a capacitor in our air conditioning unit. It was replaced through our home warranty company. We have two ac units and two furnaces. Since we lost a capacitor last year I thought it would be a good idea to have our AC inspected through Las Vegas Air conditioning $50 "check up" special around June of this year. The office staff was very friendly and we got set up for an appointment quickly. The technician came out and did a pretty thorough inspection of our units. I went with him and he talked me through the inspection process. Overall he said that we needed a new capacitor in our other unit as well as a capacitor for our furnace. To change the capacitors were $200 each. He also mentioned that one of our fan motors was only pulling 1 amp vs 3 so he said that it was on its way out ($900). He also recommended replacing the contactors on both units since they show a "little bit" of rust ($500 each). These prices seem a little high to me so I Googled how much each part cost. Capacitors: $8 for the furnace and $35 for the AC unit. $400 to replace two quick connects on each capacitor is ridiculous. Overall I replaced the capacitors and contactors myself ($43 for capacitors and $40 for the contactors) saving myself over $1000. I plan on replacing the fan motor during the fall when it's cooler ($130 part). It took a layman like me less than 30 minutes to complete using OEM part numbers and no special tools. I don't care what the hourly rate is if a 30 minute job can save me over $1400. I'll spend the 30 minutes. I don't care what the warranty is. Long story short: do your research to avoid being ripped off.
