  • Saturday night is a great time to hang out with friends and have some casual conversation, enjoy each others' company, and basically let time pass you by. Ambiance here matches most of that criteria, but I just can't help but feel that it's lacking. Green Grotto at this particular location is bustling with activity because it's in a spot where it is easily accessible by public transportation, and just so happen, is right at the border of Markham and Scarborough. That's a recipe for being busy. Not only is there a T&T nearby, there's also restaurants, catering to the hip and the family-oriented. So, when you offer them the choice to sit down, have bubble tea and enjoy a lounge setting where they can read magazines, wash it down with some complimentary popcorn, it does seem like a pretty great way to spend time. Perhaps that's why it's a bit packed. The use of space isn't clever, but it's nowhere near as utilitarian as Ten-Ren's. This is mainly because it is sporting one gigantic couch in the back corner, and surrounding it with a few smaller couches, giving it a bit of a nicer, comfier feel. I digress, because this is where it's make or break for me. The prices aren't too steep, and the food variety is embellished by the presence of a variety of cheesecakes, and a few food choices like Taiwanese sausage, wings, etc. So far, the menu looks pretty standard. Once it becomes fancy like Ten-Ren's, you're basically asking for trouble. Perhaps what really is a bit tough to swallow was the person who took our order, who should have stayed behind the bar. Unfortunately, being unable to put our orders into the computer, mixed with a poor command of the English language did not help him. However, it's not a red flag, but it does confuse you when the cake you ordered never made it, and to realize that a simple request for a bowl of popcorn was met with a puzzled look. Again, it's not terrible to the point that you'll be angry, but it may grind your gears a bit if you're low on patience. Would I return? That would depend. A bubble tea place without a board games or without a bigger selection of food is becoming rare, but without a doubt, this isn't a terrible place as it still sticks to the genre of bubble tea cafes. Though it wasn't advertised, I do believe there's wi-fi available. Treat it like a slightly noisier version of Williams, with Asian drinks and you'd be good.
