| - After a trip to the Grand Canyon, we decided to stay one extra night in Vegas on a Monday, after a long Cinco De Mayo weekend. I booked the room online on Sunday Morning during brunch, after we had already checked out of Treasure Island. Considering it was Sunday we decided to switch it up and get a little closer to Downtown (Fremont) so we could check it out since we'd already spent most of our weekend on the strip.
The check-in line was super mega long. I was like "what the heck is going on?". When I say super mega long, I mean the wait time at a hotel in Vegas has averaged about 5-10 minutes at the most. The wait time here was over 30 minutes. It was Sunday afternoon folks?!?! It felt like we were in line at LAX or we were like cattle waiting to be herded somewhere. If we would have waited any longer I think I would have started mooing.
The hotel room was decent, clean but a little worn. The patrons seem to be a little rough on the place. I noticed a do not hang stuff here sign next to the fire sprinkler in the ceiling of the bathroom. Who the heck would think to hang something on a sprinkler? I can only gather they've had enough guests who have done so, prompting the hotel to put signs up. Not classy at all folks.
So our room was shaped like boomerang with the bed on one and the TV at the other end, around the corner. Good think we don't watch too much TV is all I can say here.
I will say the bed was comfortable which is something I think is very important. The overall hotel room was similar to staying an a median Marriott. I was kind of expecting something a little more considering it was the Stratosphere. I may have possibly set my expectations a little too high. I can complain really though, considering the room price was pretty good especially considering the last minute reservation.
I know this isn't related to the hotel but I'll add it in here anyway for those deciding on a means of transportation around town. We decided to use the Bus Transit to get us over to downtown (Fremont). Getting our tickets was pretty straight forward. The bus stop we needed was out of service. It only took us about 20-30 minutes of trying to sort it out because there was really no indication of this outside of a small 8.5X11 piece of paper with some scribbles on it which wasn't very clearly written. Someone, skipped writing in elementary school and got a job in the transit system. I think maybe at the very least, turning off the lights at the bus stop would have been a decent indicator. Bus transit needs clear direction for visitors when the decide to make a bus stop out of service so people aren't blowing their time wait for a bus never to arrive to pick you up.
Now for something related to the hotel was when we were asking about where to find the ticket machine for the bus transit. It pretty much turned into Sales pitch for timeshares. The hotel has plenty of staff awaiting your arrival and departure prepared to sell you an amazing time share for a next visit back to Vegas or to some other location you never thought you'd like to go. Very persistent. Only wish they were as persistent at helping you with the transit system. Always room for improvement and there's plenty of opportunity here.
Ok so now for the amenities of the hotel. We went to the top of the Stratosphere to check it out and see what its all about. We were informed there was no fee to go to the observation deck if we purchased 2 drinks per person in the lounge at the top, so we proceeded to follow this option. We got to the lounge to get our beverages and we walk around for a bit. There were several couches and lounge chairs, all of which were pretty much taken. Then we sat and ordered a small appetizer. Our server was super cool and helpful. She was keeping an eye out for folks standing around who were looking for a place to sit and would then coordinate a place for them to sit.
When we finished, we headed for the deck. It was good timing because it was just before sunset. The sky was clear which made for a great view. We hung out from sunset to about when the city lit up. All things considered, it was a good experience.
Stratosphere... you gotta check it out at least once. We'll be heading back for sure to try out the rides at the top next time.
