| - I so wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars. The food makes it, but a simple quirk or two prevent it. Even so, I would certainly return here as the food is incredible.
I had the $60 omokase (a set menu is all they serve, at 60, 80, or 100). I had thought i was getting the $100, but I guess since i booked about 22 hours beforehand (rather than the specified 24), the only choices were the other two menus. Odd, but I don't know what is involved, so that's ok.
The restaurant is in a sort of strip mall, but very nicely decorated and with a great quiet atmosphere. I won't go into a lot of detail of the courses, as others described them and they vary. The tuna tartare (a very easy dish to make boring) was incredible, flavorful, and inventive. The shrimp in the first cours was very lightly cooked with the most delicately fried shrimp head i have had. wonderful.
The hot plate was next, which included amazing slices of Japanese beef and some vegetables. Also, incredible.
The nigiri sushi course was outstanding with, I think 6 small pieces of nigiri. each had its own sauces and was very authentic and great.
Here is where the first quirk entered. I thought it would be good to have 2 more pieces of nigiri. i had asked beforehand and was told i could order a bit more i wanted. however, it seems the chef does not wish to serve another 1 or 2 pieces of nigiri, but rather a plate of 6, of his choosing. the 6 pieces would be aboutu $28 or so. that isn't bad for the quality, but I didn't want 6 pieces. only 2. No dice. Would not happen. Mind you, I understand omokasa, but typically, one can order a couple more pieces of the ones you liked (i had no special requests). They shoudl re-think this part of the concept.
The dessert was delicious. A japanese custard (not sweet or rich) topped with berries and fruit. it's really better than that description.
The service was perfect, though i think 1 hour for 4 courses is a bit of rapid pace. Plates were served promptly. I think it would be good to divide the 4 couruse menu up a bit to slow down the pace, as the food is so delicious it deserves more time on the table.
I think the prices here are extremely reasonable for the quality and the preparation is outstanding. the lack of flexibility in adding to the omokase menu (not changing it) is dissapointing.
Despite the quirks. you shoudl go.
