| - I really hate to leave a bad review for an animal shelter, but um... idk. I had been looking at their dogs online for quite some time. The dog that I was interested in, Mackenzie, (a gorgeous elderly bull terrier) had caught my eye and been in the shelter for quite some time. My boyfriend and I decided we would like to meet her and adopt her.
When I first got to the shelter it seemed fine. There were a lot of people there despite it being Memorial Day. I was glad to see that they were open that day. I walked to the front desk and was approached by a blonde woman in her fifties and she asked me "what did I want." Okay.. first red flag.
I had read about Mackenzie online and that she wasn't good with other animals, and she had anxiety and scratches on her face because she would get nervous around other dogs and hit her head on the kennels at the shelter. I asked to see her and the woman literally ROLLED her eyes and said, "really? You're interested in Mackenzie? Are you sure?" I just looked at my boyfriend like .. is this bitch really saying that?
While we were waiting for them to get Mackenzie someone else approached us. Tall black guy. Gave us the same speel when I said I was waiting to see Mackenzie. "Have you ever had a bull terrier before? She'll be hard to raise, she has lots of scratches on her nose, etc she's so violent...," basically giving me ALL the negative facts about the dog. At this point I was so nervous about meeting the dog I was considering just saying the hell with it and leaving.
Eventually someone brought out Mackenzie to the backyard area, handed us the leash, and literally LEFT so it was just my boyfriend and I alone with the dog. WTF!
First of all, Mackenzie is NOT AT ALL how they described her. She was calm as hell! She was a total sweetheart! Nothing at all like how they described her, so I really hate the fact that they gave her a bad rep, even on the website!! The only thing that was true is that she does get nervous around other dogs as when some came up to the fence she freaked out and pulled at her leash to the point where she was almost choking herself. I was a little disheartened to see that her face had gotten 10x more fucked up than her pictures online, like what are they doing to help her? She definitely needs veterinary care and her legs and face are all bloody and infected! Don't tell me they can't isolate her and treat her wounds ! That pissed me off!
As much as I wanted to adopt her I know that I couldn't because I live in an area with a lot of other dogs, especially smaller ones she could potentially attack. I strongly suggest that if anyone responsible should want just one dog and is responsible enough to handle her to adopt her. She is so sweet and she is very calm. I found another bull terrier at a different foundation & I will be meeting with them soon. Won't be going back to Nevada SPCA because the employees truly don't seem like they care about the animals. Just another day at work for them.
