  • We hired Rockstar landscaping to do a relatively straightforward job and cover approximately 300 sq feet with grass for a planned dog run. That included rock removal, irrigation installation, ground leveling, top soil and sod placement. We also requested a couple holes for future trees as well as irrigation for those trees. Seemed like a pretty easy job, The owner had a reasonable price, so we went ahead with Rockstar. We were told it would be completed in 2-3 days and that the crew would be there early morning Thursday 5/24. No one showed up and when I inquired about it (around 10am) with the owner I was told "my crew had a flat tire and they're running late". Well, that should have been related to us that morning but it wasn't. I had to ask where her employees were. I contacted The owner via yelp text. After being told she should have contacted us immediately to let us know her employees would be late or weren't planning on showing up she became defensive and said she would send someone in the afternoon. One person arrived a few hours later, started digging the irrigation trench, and left an hour later. After contacting The owner we were told the employee said our ground was "too hard". The next day a couple guys showed up in the morning at an appropriate time, which we were happy about. They started the process so we went about our day. At the end of the day we checked in the progress. It was nothing that we expected. Very little rock was removed and the trench was fairly shallow. We assumed, incorrectly, that the issue would be addressed the next day because we assumed, again incorrectly, this was a professional company. Well, I was leaving town for 2 weeks and my boyfriend works anywhere between 48 to 72 hours at a time so neither of us would be home to babysit. My boyfriend came home when dog run was supposedly finished. He called me and said we should have saved our money because it looked like he had done the work, not a professional company. They had failed to level the area, they failed to remove nearly enough rock (we had a lot of natural and artificially placed rock in the area), they failed to put down topsoil, the sprinklers stuck out of the ground as much as 6" in some areas, and the grass looked like it was laid by someone that did not know what they were doing or they didn't care how the finished product looked like. I contacted The owner and told her she needed to fix the sprinklers (we didn't know about the top soil until we checked and we didn't realize how important leveling was until we consulted another landscaper). She said she would replace the heads with smaller ones but they weren't as nice and wouldn't last as long. Although we were expecting the new heads to be cheap, after seeing the replacement heads we were pretty upset. They were next level cheap, flimsy, and they were still an inch to several inches about the grass. I learned a valuable life lesson; you get what you pay for. Going with the lowest bidder is not necessarily your best bet. Throughout the process Rockstar was unpleasant. We had to constantly ask for updates. Every time we inquired about the progress we were addressed in a manner that was far from professional. Lastly, guess what? The grass is mostly dead! She set the watering schedule, which was correct. But the lack of topsoil, the lack of rock removal, and lack of equal water distribution (because of the low and high spots as well as new heads that even after adjustment spray over the fence into my neighbors yard) is probably, in my opinion, what killed our grass. Wrapping up, now we have to spend more money to correct this mess. I'm by no means a confrontational or vindictive person. I'm not writing this because I'm trying to put someone out of work or destroy someone's business. I'm just giving a completely honest assessment of an awful job. After paying a professional company to do a job, you shouldn't have to babysit the job site. I am so disappointed by the job that I cancelled my monthly yard service that I've had for a few months with Rockstar.
