| - White Tanks Regional Park is a wonderful area maintained by Maricopa County. It boasts several easy trails with interesting features all at an affordable price and close to the Phoenix metroplex.
PRICE: The guard gate charges about $6 per vehicle no matter if you are carrying 1 or 5 passengers. If you walk or bike to the park, the fee is only $2. Bonus, your dog gets a doggie biscuit.
FACILITIES: There are several paved lots where you can park your car. These parking lots are positioned at the trail heads where there are information boards, bathrooms and dog poop bag dispensers.
TRAIL: The waterfall trail is mostly flat with a gradual incline leading to a canyon where water flows over the rock face and pools below. The best days to see the water flowing is on a day after it has rained. The trail is about a mile long. There is also a loop trail that you can take that spurs off the waterfall trail. Everything is well marked. The trail is quite wide and accommodates a lot of people during the cooler, winter months. Most of the trail is without shade.
WATERFALL: At the end of the trail, there is a small crevice between a boulder and the canyon wall that you have to crawl through in order to see the "waterfall". It is more like a small stream of water flowing smoothly down the rock face into a small pool. I visited two days after it had rained during late December, and I'm guessing that's about as impressive as it is ever going to get. Still, it is always a pleasure to find water in the desert. The canyon area is shaded and because of that and the water, you will notice a considerable drop in the temperature.
WHAT TO WEAR: Despite the cooler temps in the canyon, you probably won't need a sweater. Wear long sleeves to protect your skin from the suns harsh rays all year, long pants to protect yourself from sun and cactus and closed toe, sturdy shoes to maintain balance on the dirt trail with exposed rock. Sunscreen is a must year round.
WHAT YOU'LL SEE: The trail winds through a typical Sonoran desert landscape with saguaros, jumping cholla, barrel cactus, etc. On the way to the waterfall, you will see lots of boulders with petroglyphs and information boards throughout the trail that will educate you of their meaning. This is a great Pokémon trail too. Several pokestops are on trail, a gym is at the trailhead, and lots of great Pokémon can be collected along the way.
DOGS: Dogs are allowed on trail as long as they are leashed. There are a lot of dogs on trail, so make sure they are well socialized and under your control at all times. A poop bag dispenser and trash container can be found at the trail head for your convenience.
WHO: People of all ages (young, old and in between) could be seen making their way to the waterfall. One guy even pulled his two kids in a wagon over the uneven terrain (Note: It didn't look fun or easy for him or his kids).
Enjoy this little county treasure with Sonoran desert landscapes, petroglyphs and a waterfall in a canyon. I loved experiencing this park that highlights the best of what the desert has to offer.
