The Skinny: interesting flavors but the texture is off(3) service: confusing counter service when the place is crowded(3) value: small portion sizes for the price, this joint will not replace my usual gelato haunts(3).
We headed to this gelato joint opening day. The place was packed with people and it was confusing how the ordering system goes. Basically you had to wade through a crowd of people and grab someone's attention behind the counter. They take your order and ring up the sale. There is no line which makes it sort of chaotic when it is busy.
We tried the pistachio, the pear and rhubarb, panna cotta and figs, and coconut and lychee.
We liked all the interesting flavors. The pistachio was especially good. Panna cotta with figs was a bit too sweet but had a nice crunch with the figs. Pear and rhubarb is a great combination. Coconut/lychee had a nice intense flavor.
The main problem is the temperature and the texture of the product. When sampling the gelato, texturally it was way too runny/soft. Shortly after our purchase, the gelato became soupy rather quickly. I think the way the gelato is displayed (heaped in large bowls in a cooler) makes it difficult to maintain a cold enough temperature.
Serving size is small. A three scoop cup (about a small/medium cup) will run you $6.50.
The seating area is kind of uncomfortable. There are communal circular backless couches with knee-high round coffee tables which offer more style than comfort. I just can't see myself lingering here. This is a grab and go kind of place.
Overall, I was really looking forward to this place opening but in the end it doesn't replace any of the smaller excellent local joints around. (3 starred review).
