| - A friend and I were on our way to drink at AZ88 in Scottsdale and check out the cool restroom video installation(yes, really!). I mentioned as I saw Sips sign in the distance that I had heard a crazy story about a new sea-ship themed tiki bar going in under the former oil and lube drive-thru now coffee and beer place.
We pulled in, went downstairs(no windows, if you have issues with claustrophobia) and were lucky to get two seats on the edge of the space. it's tiny, but mighty. It turned out it was night 2 of their soft opening. Cool tricks involve seaside videos playing in the wall-mounted "portholes", the music is tiki-themed and good stuff, and was told they will be adding lots of sound effects to make the atmosphere more deep and subliminal. Good stiff drinks, not a cheap night out but everything is using top-shelf stuff. As one of the numerous staff members told me, the bar is sized just small enough to make every seat conversational. In other words, don't expect to sit at one end of the bar and sulk alone. It simply can't happen.
I can see this becoming very, very popular and am glad we got to see it when we did. You may not spend your whole evening there, but it's a great part of a unusual night in the Valley.
