  • My boyfriend and I recently decided it was time to bring home a little dog to join our family. We had both rescued animals in the past and knew we wanted to do so again, so the APL was the perfect choice for us. We were very specific in our needs. We wanted an older dog, small, laid back temperament, and we were fans of the pug breed. We visited the APL twice and looked at the website pretty much daily until we found a dog that could potentially be right for us. Sometimes patience is key! We knew what we wanted and waited, and I'm so glad we did. The APL partners with the Parma PetSmart and some of their animals are available for adoption there, including the one we were interested in. The APL staff were great in giving us background information on the little guy, including his health history and information about his previous living situation. They let us have one on one time with him to make sure he was the right fit for us. They asked us questions about our home, schedules, etc which I really appreciated. It shows they really care about who they adopt these animals to and want to make sure they find good homes. After all this, we signed the papers and a little 7 year old pug mix was ours! Unfortunately, a few hours after bringing him home we noticed he was coughing and wheezing a little bit, which an APL staff member warned us could be signs of kennel cough. But a quick call to the APL and they gave us free meds to treat him. Now he's completely healthy and happy. He was the perfect for us and has adapted to our family so well! I would absolutely recommend the APL and I would definitely come here if we were to adopt again. For anyone who had never adopted before and is considering it, I would recommend really doing your research and figuring out what breed, size and age of dog is best for you! Although puppies are so cute, we knew we didn't have the time to train one (we both work full time). Also, consider adopting an older animal. A lot of times they are at least partially trained/housebroken and can quickly adapt to a new environment. Older dogs have usually had a rough life, but have so much love to give! And our 7 year old pup has the attitude of a puppy, without all the peeing on the carpet!
