| - Wow..what can I say...hidden in the northern part of the GTA is an amazing place where if your a fan of reptiles you have to visit Reptilia!! I came here on a CMYE #GoTAYELPTHIS event organized by Kris U. The location is situated in a very unassuming industrial building in Vaughan very near to Vaughan Mills and Wonderland.
Entering the building your greeted by the front desk area and the retail store. Stuffed lizards and snakes adorn the walls and various items for the reptile lover or collector are available to purchase. The cost of admission is $15 dollars for an adult day pass. Speaking to the front desk staff, they can accommodate groups, birthday parties and private functions as well as the day to day operations.
You enter viewing area and you are immediately greeted by various lizards, turtles, snakes, frogs, crocodiles, alligators and almost any type of reptilian fauna you can think of. As a guest you follow a path that winds and weaves through the building past different exhibits and living habitats of each creature. On different hours and days they showcase "Live feedings" of the inhabitants of Reptilia. The "Live feeding" is not really showing live animals being fed, but the "live" feeding of the reptiles using dead animals. On our visit we had a chance to witness a "live" feeding of an albino boa constrictor. OMG wow...I have seen small animals being consumed by snakes, but never a full sized rabbit...hair and all..I was wondering if the kids there would be turned off or scared, but all of them were so interested. The staff at Reptilia are great, they are very helpful and explain things perfectly for kids and adults as well on the happenings of Reptilia.
I walked around viewing the reptiles and I noticed that they have a volunteer program for kids and teens and I think adults as well. There is also a program in which you can bring your child once a week to "work" as a junior volunteer. This includes helping guests, following the reptile handlers and even feeding the reptiles in the enclosures. Looks like a great program for kids!
Reptilia is well run and the staff there are friendly and informative. Its a different experience than just going to the zoo and it can be enjoyed year round. The only downside is that some of the exhibit pathways are narrow and on busy days I can see it being difficult to view the exhibits up close. I would rate it a 5 for experience, but I have to dock a star for that issue. Reptilia... solid 4 stars
