| - 808 Shave Ice lives up to its billing, this could be the next big thing to start popping up all over. Located on Lorain Road across from the Fairview Park library is a cool looking shop with rough cut timber siding. The parking lot is very small and triangle shaped so it is hard to navigate, plus if you arrive at the wrong time the line can be very long, but it is worth navigating these issues because the product is that good.
You order at the window, there are small and large sizes, with a plethora of flavors; you can pick your own combination of 3 sauces or use one of the combinations they have created. The ice is shaved from a circular block that is spun around and results in a light fluffy ice that most closely resembles powder snow; a vast improvement from the old school sno cones. They pack the shaved ice into a large ball in a colorful dish and then pour on the toppings. I tried a small Lahaina Luna which has Pineapple, Coconut and Banana flavors, plus I added the snowcap (condensed sweetened cream). The light texture of the ice and bright colored syrups results in beautiful looking treat, one of the prettiest desserts I have seen.
I ate inside where they have acrylic holders that elevate the treat to a perfect height. Because of the way the ice is shaved the syrup is distributed evenly and the air in the snow results in a cool, but not freezing treat, perfect on a hot day, but still enjoyable when the weather is cooler. The syrups are all distinctive, with different bites having different flavors; you can identify each fruit flavor, the sweetness level is there, but not overwhelming. At the bottom you get to the well of extra syrup which is a nice finish to the treat. I was extremely impressed with 808 Shaved Ice and will get back when I can. This is a great alternative to ice cream, although you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom for an extra $1, I would strongly recommend 808 Shaved Ice to everyone.
