  • I came to the dealership around 1:30PM and asked for a sales representative. I explained that I was currently leasing a Mercedes B200 and that my lease was coming to an end in early July. I said I was interested in looking at the Tiguan as a possible alternative. We looked at the car, I sat in it and found it comfortable and to my liking. We then went to the desk of the vendor and started working some numbers. I told the sales person that I had a quote from Mercedes and shared the price and the packages that I got if I do another lease with them. My sole intention was to be perfectly clear about where I was in my purchasing process. I also indicated to the sales person that there was 2 way we could get this done: either by getting me a better car than Mercedes for the same price, or by getting a similar one but at a lower price. We started with that option. After the test drive, we came back to the desk and worked the numbers some more. At this point, we were looking for a ComfortLine model with the technology package. The numbers were working beautifully and we had not even started discussing the discount, when the sales person looked at the inventory and told me that unfortunately only 1 car was left and it was not in one of the 3 colours I had selected. You can imagine I was disappointed, but I was ready to move ahead with option B. Now one thing you need to do, is that the quote Mercedes gave me, is pretty much the equivalent of the highline, minus the 4 wheel drive (they don't have that on the B250), minus the 18 inch wheels which I did not care about and minus the leather which I did not care about either. However it included other things such as Bi-Xenon, blindspot assist, lane keeping assist, and other small things. We started working the number on this one, and as you can imagine, we came way above the Mercedes price. We were at $42 a month higher on a 48 month lease with VW without the technology package (which I had with Mercedes). At this point I said to the vendor that it did not look like it would work, because I would be looking for reducing the price by $42 a month with the technology package included. At first the person sent me some signals that it was not possible. Fine by me, as far as I was concerned, the deal was simple, so I was ready to leave and forget about it. No hard feeling, business is business, if we can't meet somewhere, then let's part way and best luck next time. I was then told that the sales person could maybe talk to the manager. So I sat while the vendor stood up and began to walk to his office. Midway, the vendor turned back and came back to ask for my credit card. I asked why? After all, I was only interested to know whether they could match the price or not. If the answer was yes, I would have needed at least 24h of delay to make up my mind. I was told that the credit card would show that I was really interested in the purchase. I said: "Do you think I come to spend time with car vendors on a Saturday afternoon because I like it?". The person insisted but I said there's no way I'm going to give you my credit card at this point. The next thing the vendor tried to do was to make me sign the lease offer. Again, I refused. I don't buy for a minute that this was a process issue, this looked very much to me like forced sales and I have no patience for that. Besides, when the vendor saw I was not going to give my credit card, it was a completely stupid idea to ask me to do another thing even more pushy than the previous one. At this point, I decided I did not want to deal with someone who was pushing me like this and I wished the vendor a good day and left the dealership. 30 mn later, the vendor called me on my cell phone to ask me why I left. First of all, I found this extremely intrusive, but being a polite and nice person I tried to answer the questions. I explained that the vendor was pushing me by asking me for my credit card or my signature on a paper, and that at that time all I was asking for, was whether they could match the price or not, and that for this reason I was not going to do business with this person. The next thing the person say is that this is just part of the process, and it's not normal that I did not want to do it, that it meant I was not ready to purchase and that my explanations were not acceptable to the vendor. I was blown away by the stupidity of this person, who not only completely broke my trust by trying for force me to do things I clearly did not want to do, but now was now calling me to scold me on the phone. At this point I asked the person to not call me ever again, that I would not do business with that sales rep and I hung up. I had been with Mercedes for 6 1/2 year, yet, I was ready to give a chance to another brand because I was genuinely interested by the Tiguan. The experience I've had has definitely ruined any chance that I will buy something with VW.
