I sincerely wanted to like this place. I have been there 4 or 5 times, always with the same result: exceptionally below average.
The ambience is cute, with the waiters in Lederhosen and the waitresses in drindles, and a seemingly-authentic menu. The beer is above average, but barely.
Now to the food. Without the beer, I would give zero stars. Absolutely horrendous. The few standouts were the fried cabbage and weisswurst.
The weiner schnitzel was well below average. The kraut was cold and bland. "imported" or not. The pork cutlets were so incredibly dry that even gravy couldn't save them.
Cute try at a German bierhall, but the food is awful. If you are looking for authentic German fare without the Lederhosen and tacky decorations, go to Max's Allegheny Tavern on the North Side. They have been doing it well since 1903, when the area was called "Deutschtown" because of the large number of German immigrants.
