| - I've been part of the crossfit craze for at least three to four years now. I've been to quite a few boxes over the years - either visiting in a different city or as a member.
I first met the owner, Tom, when I first started my journey at a different box. He was (and is) always friendly, very approachable and always willing to help. What sets him even more apart are the following in my mind: 1. His knowledge, and 2. his programming. I'll talk about his programming. Too many boxes feel that to get their clients the crossfit experience is to have these immensely long, beat down workouts that used to run me into the ground. I'd start getting these little nagging injuries - nothing to prevent me from working out - because I could push through, but then I'd sit at home and not do anything else. That's when it dawned on me - crossfit is great, but for me and my physical abilities, I wanted crossfit to be a tool to be able to do things outside of the gym better, easier etc. When I look at a crossfit gym, I always look at programming past and that gives me a great feel for what to expect. Tom's programming is fantastic. He throws in a good mix of strength, cardio, endurance and OPT type stuff that in my mind makes it work well. This is the kind of programming that will let me hike that little bit farther during the weekends. This is the kind of programming that will let me carry that awkwardly shaped thing (box/ furniture/ whatever) a little easier with good technique without hurting myself.
I've been to this box a few times on Saturdays. The box has plenty of space and has always had enough equipment for a busy Saturday class and nobody is breathing on top of each other. I like that. The coach of the hour is Santana who is funny and knows how to warm you up well for the workout. Before the workout starts though, everyone including the coach is very friendly and will introduce themselves to put you at ease. Whether this is the first time you've ever tried Crossfit or you're coming in to check out the box, you'll be at ease. While Santana goes through the warm up with you, Tom, will go around providing pointers if necessary. With people completely new to Crossfit, I've seen him provide a lot of one-on-one time to ensure proper form and provide motivation. Finally, once the workout is done, there is a cool down stretch that I think is invaluable. When you're still warm from the workout is the best time to static stretch and improve flexibility and this is when the jokes start to fly. Santana always manages to find some awesome stretching music that makes you really enjoy the post workout stretch.
Of course, no place is perfect. So what's the bad? The location. It doesn't work for me. I live in the east valley which is why I visit only on Saturdays. Despite this, I feel like I'm part of the group at DTP. If Tom were to open a location in the east valley (Chandler/ Gilbert) area *hint hint* I'd very seriously consider becoming a member of Crossfit DTP-EV.
