  • As far as southern style BBQ goes, it was 3-3.5 stars. Before I get into the review, you know those Yelp deals? They really shouldn't put the % savings because you never really save that much. You always spend more than what the voucher is worth. If you save a dollar, the ad should say you save a dollar, not 50%. It's really misleading. Anyway, we got the $20 for $10 deal, and ended up spending an extra $27 plus tip. 50% my a$$. We got two combo plates: Full rack of spare ribs plus two sides ($25) and 3-meat plate plus two sides ($20). The full rack was 8 or 9 good sized bones. The BBQ was fair meaning not the most tender, flavorful ever but not dry or rubbery either. The sides weren't very good though. The onion rings looked and tasted soggy with oil. The mac n cheese was just so-so. The corn bread was dry and saw-dusty. The 3-meat combo consisted of pulled pork, beef rib tips, and brisket. The brisket was a pile of confetti but still tasted okay. The tips and pork weren't bad either. And, the portions were large but not impressive. The coleslaw was decent but the foam cup it came in was filled less than full. Why does every place skimp on the slaw? It's just cabbage and watered down mayo! The sweet potato fries were meh but at least somewhat less oil sogged than the rings. We got a squeeze bottle of their house BBQ sauce with our order but resisted the urge to spurge on the loaded bottle because that stuff is loaded with sugar. There were also 4 different brands of hot sauce on the table as well as the usual round of salt, pepper, more sugar and honey. The hot sauces, frankly, all tasted almost identical to me but they added some interest. Also interesting were the many black and white photos from Afro-American history displayed on all the walls. The overall deco was quaint and simple with a mild touch of southern charm. The staff was very friendly except for the lady at the front who seemed a bit gruff when we first walked in but eventually got around to smiling later on. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and the food gets a solid 3 and 3.5 for the BBQ portion. It would've a sure 4 if the sides were better, but the friendly service made up for it.
