| - On a day off, I booked an appointment at Lola with Sandi for a long overdue cut, hoping to walk out of there feeling refreshed and looking great. Unfortunately, I did not get the experience that I was hoping for.
When I sat down in Sandi's chair, we started off with the usual stuff - tell me about your hair, your routine, when you last got it cut. I started off by saying it had been a while, maybe 6 months. Sandi's response?
"No one should go more than 3 months between cuts"
Well, then. This is off to a warm, friendly start.
How do you style your hair, she then asked me. "Uh... I blow dry it?"
In light of this information, Sandi proposes cutting off all of my layers and giving me, essentially, a longish, uni-length bob. Not because it would look great, frame my face, whatever. But because it suits my "lifestyle". I'm not convinced, but I've always kind of wanted to not have layers, so I agree.
During the hair wash, I start having second thoughts. Hasn't every single hair dresser I have ever gone to in my entire life given me layers because of my very thick straight hair? Am I going to look like I have a wedge cut? How much did she say she was going to cut off again?
When we get back to her chair, I ask about how much she's going to cut off, basically seeking a little reassurance. Her reply: "This is why we talked about this before we washed your hair." This, after I listened to her talk to another customer during my hair wash about whether to cut 1.5 inches or 2.
So I try another tact - "If you wanted to make my hair look great, forgetting my lifestyle, what would you do?" She then starts on about how her original idea is best for my lifestyle. At this point, I just give up. But now she doesn't feel comfortable going ahead with the cut unless it's what I really want.
At this point, I want to stab myself with her scissors out of frustration. And yet, I reassure her that this is what I want, just so we can get on with it and I can get out of there. To her credit, she says that she'll give me layers afterwards if I'm not happy (i.e. after she's cut like three inches off my hair) and attempts to make small talk. She proceeds to spend 15 minutes cutting my hair, then another 15 blow drying and styling it. I say it looks good, because it does. Not because it's a great cut, but just because it was freshly cut.
I spent $93 with tip. Basically, this experience was the sad trombone of hair cuts.
