This was my second time here. The ambience is charming and romantic both inside and outside and the tables are spaced well enough to have a good conversation with your crowd and not worry about hearing others nearby.
One of the best sangrias I've had, and I try sangria almost every time a restaurant offers it. There are three versions, we chose the classic. Get a pitcher... it is very generous and totally worth it.
My friends and I started with the calamari in squid ink, and bacon wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese. Both were exceptional! We also had the eggplant pastry which we agreed was worth skipping the next time.
Between the three tapas my two friends and I were almost full, but paella was already ordered so we tried that as well. We splurged on the lobster paella which I don't think was really worth it. The lobster was somewhat dry and hard to pull out. Considering the price was about $10 more than the others, next time I'll just try the mussels and clams one instead, or just stick with the variety of tapas.
We were there on a Saturday and got to enjoy the flemenco dancers and live music. It was beautiful. The stage presence of all performers was electric, you can really feel that they love their country and culture.
All in all, a great evening. I lived in Spain for two different summers. While this dinner could never duplicate the true Plaza Mayor experience, it is likely one of the best you can find in the Phoenix area.
