| - The staff here is pleasant enough, and tries hard, but a rental car company MUST invest actual money into their primary asset, the rental cars.
After a decent first experience, I was very pleased given the price and have since rented through them multiple times. However, each time the experience gets worse and worse and this most recent rental will likely be my last.
My first rental from this location was not without incident, but pretty par for the course when compared against Enterprise or Hertz (far subpar to Avis or National though). I was assigned what appeared to be a newer Nissan Atima (due to the temporary tag on the back), which other than some very deep and large keyed marks on the body, appeared to be in good shape. Imagine my surprise when I cranked the car up and saw that it had 43,000 miles on it! However, for the most part, other than a buzzing speaker (for which they were not willing to swap the car out), it drove like new and had no major problems.
On my second rental, due to a shortage of cars, I was assigned a non-current model year Kia Optima. Unfortunately this car had a cracked windshield, terribly stained seats, bone dry windshield washer fluid reserve, 44,000 miles (also with a temporary tag on the back), and completely bald front tires. As there was nothing else available, I took it, however it certainly made driving in the rain tricky. The maintenance and cleanliness issues aside, the car was actually a pleasant car to drive especially to have such high miles.
On my third and current rental, I was again assigned the same Kia Optima with the same dirty interior, same cracked windshield, and same bald tires. I tried swapping this vehicle out a few different times due to the hazardous tires, but each car offered was worse. A Nissan Sentra and a 2011 [or older] Ford Taurus (can tell by the interior) with 60k miles, a broken driver's seatback that would shift positions each time you braked, and a steering wheel that could not possibly have been connected to the front wheels. Each time I decided to keep the Optima as it was the lesser of the evils.
However, today I noticed that the nylon thread cords were starting to show through the front tires, so immediately I took it to the location to swap it out as they are no longer safe in any sense of the word, or legal. Their systems were down so the agent initially claimed she could not swap the vehicle out for me, but after insisting to her that the tires are merely miles away from a blowout and are neither safe nor legal, she swapped me into a base model 2012 [or older] Ford Fusion which I immediately refused. I did not even check the mileage, but it also had a temporary tag. I requested the NIssan Maxima or Ford Escape that were sitting on the lot and was flat out refused both. Eventually I was assigned a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta S which is absolutely bare bones with an anemic engine, NO cruise control, extremely limited audio inputs, and a half tank of gas. Interestingly enough, this car only has 6,000 miles on it and Pennsylvania plates.
The lack of maintenance of the vehicles aside (bald tires, empty washer fluid, damages, etc), the most concerning thing with this location is that they are clearly buying high mileage used cars (according to a decal on the Ford Escape at least some of their cars come from an Auction Yard in Philadelphia) and renting them out. I would expect this from a company such Rent-A-Wreck or perhaps a small European franchised location operating in Israel/Cyprus, but this is absolutely not acceptable, even for a franchised location, if this location is going to fly the Sixt flag in the US.
The temporary tags on the cars state that the Franchisee for this location is East Coast Car Rental LLC based in Greenville, SC. The registration documents for the Jetta that I currently have state that the car is registered to East Coast Car Rental LLC in Pennsylvania. I cannot find information on this company in either location.
