  • I really wish there was anything close to equivalent to Planet Workout in Toronto (24/7 gym, fair membership price clearly advertised with a no contract option, big equipment selection, classes included)... alas, no longer work in the area and cannot take advantage of Planet Workout anymore. The gym is located in a small plaza, with most of the equipment in the huge main room with rows of cardio equipment facing a row of TVs and comprehensive offering of weight machines and free weights. I have seen quite a few bodybuilders and female fitness models work out here, so variety and size of weights, both machine and free, are good (but there is definitively no douchebaggy attitudes around like at most Extreme Fitness locations). Equipment is not the latest (no treadmills with individual TVs with cable here) but not too old either - but there is a large selection and there is practically no waiting even during 'busy' times. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful, but trainers are never in your face or 'working the floor' trying to get patrons to sign up for personal training sessions. Music playing is not loud/intrusive (usually it's 102.1 The Edge on the main floor). However, in the separate smaller room for ladies only, they have a set up where patrons can pick the radio station or play their own CD - every time I've gone in, it was the usual Top 40 crap being blasted so I generally avoided working out here if at all possible (though for some of the machines, smaller increments are only available in ladies only room). Did I mention classes are included? Well, yoga, spinning, cardio kickbox and bootcamp are, and Zumba and muay thai kickboxing are extra. You can use the boxing room on your own though at any time, and there are even some boxing gloves around (but do you really want to absorb other people's sweat?). Bootcamp with Ian is intense, and you get personal attention as, even though everyone in the class does the same exercises, each person does the exercises at their own pace. Ian will show each person (or whole class if you are there on time) several exercises that are done on a mini-circuit basis (one set of each for a prescribed number of times), and then show you the new set of exercises when you are done your previous mini-circuit. If you are doing something wrong, your form will be corrected, and Ian will also push you if he notices you are starting to slack off on your exercises. Completely amazing whole-body workout - yes, you will be completely sore, but also feel great and (oddly enough) super-energized! Bootcamp incorporates primarily free weights and body resistance exercises with a bit of pure cardio sprinkled in... but even when you are doing resistance exercises, due to the quick pace you will also be getting a cardio workout at the same time as your heart rate is kept up throughout. Ladies, don't be afraid of weights - you cannot get toned without them and they will not make you 'bulk up' (despite some popular myths around... women simply don't have enough testosterone for this to happen). Gentlemen, this is certainly not your mom's aerobics class - if you push yourself and grab heavier dumbells, you can build muscle AND get a cardio workout at the same time (you know you hate the treadmill!). Yoga with Devon is a great way to improve flexibility and get some deep stretches into your routine. Since it's at a gym, expect basic/intermediate level. She is a great instructor and provides instructions throughout for beginners and modifications for those with injuries. Yoga studio itself is nice and very clean - only downside to relaxation is when there is a Zumba class next door in the basketball court and you can hear the music. Planet Workout also offers free childcare during certain hours. Overall, highly recommended.
