There seems to be an explosion in barbecue restaurants in south Charlotte lately. Some of them are crazy expensive like $15 for some cue and two sides (add tea, tax and tip and you're well over $20). Barbecue began as an inexpensive but magically tasty source of food so I find it curious that these new places think they can charge premium prices.
Bill Spoon's remains true to it's roots and is a god-send among some of these trendy (ridiculous) new places. Go to Spoons and experience all the things that makes barbecue great. Simple, well-prepared barbecue. Simple but well-prepared sides. Simple decor. Friendly southern service. The building is plain and simple. The decor is plain and simple. Food comes on a paper plate.
But the food is great. The service is fast. The prices are good. And there's a family tradition here that no "investor group" can create at one of the fancy new places. Kudos to Steve for carrying on the work his grandfather began. And for keeping it real.
If you want to go and spend $22 on mediocre barbecue at a trendy full service restaurant, go ahead. I'll dine at Spoons. I'll have a better meal and a better time. And I'll keep more money in my pocket.
