| - I used to own a well known, reputable, full service repair company. I won't mention the business here. We performed repairs in nearly every trade. Electrical, plumbing, drywall, welding, and yes, roofing..but we didn't offer full or even partial re-roofs, so I needed a roofer for my two homes. When I needed a full re-roof, I did what most people do- used a friend or acquaintance. It was a disaster. The company was a large local roof company, one of the 5 largest in the valley, and if you've searched for roofers online, you'd instantly know the name. I won't mention their name as it isn't appropriate. I did business the way I'm used to doing it, on a handshake, trusting someone that I know from someone else. I paid a very large up front deposit (5-7k) they requested to "get the ball rolling." Weeks later, I hadn't heard a thing from them. I called to check on progress. They hadn't even begun the process of putting me on the schedule, but they sure were quick to cash my check. I searched Yelp, their reputation was absolutely awful. My heart sank, and I was livid. I demanded a refund in full. I searched for another roofer on Yelp with a better reputation, and that is when I saw Stell Roofing, which had (far and away) the best reputation. Let me be clear on this point; Friends/clients often compare me to Mike Holmes. I expect a lot from my guys, and I run a tight ship. I fight as hard as I can to keep people happy.. we make reminder calls, courtesy calls when we're en route, offer premium work, we make follow up calls, we do what we say we're going to do, when we say we're going to do it etc. STILL, I can only manage a 4 1/2 star rating on Yelp, and my business' number of Yelp reviews aren't even remotely close to Stell Roofing. When Mike showed up for an estimate, I'll never forget the look on his face..he hadn't even said anything and I said "Mike Stell, it's an honor to meet you..." he looked a bit confused as if maybe I was pulling his chain.. before he could respond I said "any man that has the numbers you have on Yelp and has maintained a 5 star review must be a man among men.. I don't know how the heck you've managed that, but that's an amazing accomplishment." I asked for a bid for a full re-roof on both my personal residence, and my rental. Money was tight, and I could have had it done cheaper by a here today gone tomorrow guy, but my wife and I did that in '03 when we didn't know any better, never again! I didn't care what it was, I was hiring Mike. I hadn't received the bids yet, but I said "You're the one that I want to do the work, it's just a matter of when you can do it. He gave me the bids, and said he was about two months out. I happily waited, and it was the best roofing decision we've ever made.. the roofs are textbook.. they could be used in an ad for lifetime shingles. His men were nice, clean, thoughtful, hard working, smiling workers. I do have one regret.. there were about 14 men, two roof crews to do both of my homes, and I wish I had been able to tip all of them more than the 20.00 a piece that I did. If you think a contractor is a miracle worker or a God, you'll probably be let down- we are only human, I hope these amazing reviews don't give Mike Stell shoes to big to fill- but if you're looking for the best roofer in the valley, that you can count on to give you the best roof possible, for the best value you can find anywhere, call Mike Stell, he was everything I thought he would be and more. Stell roofing is now the ONLY company I recommend to my clients when a repair doesn't make sense, and they need a new roof, and we are extraordinarily careful with whom we tie our name to in any way.
