The 2-star description is labeled as "Meh, I've experienced better." That basically sums up El Hefe. Came here late this past Saturday night for my sister's 21st birthday. The line to get in was outrageously long, and we waited probably close to 30-40 minutes before we decided to just pay the bouncer to let us in... wasn't worth it.
The layout of El Hefe is basically this: everything is centered around the bar. The restaurant is pretty much in the shape of a rectangle, with the bar in the middle of it. On the outer layer is the private-VIP seats, and the space between the bar and the seats is your "dance space" (I'm not even going to call it a dance floor because it's way too small to be that). There's a DJ on one end of the restaurant, and there's a little bit more room to dance there, but it's just so crowded that you basically can't dance without being back to back or shoulder to shoulder with everyone around you. Even buying a drink is difficult. You'll get your area at the bar and try to order a drink, but the bartenders just go to whomever--not really noticing who's been standing there for longer or shorter periods of time.
I don't know my experience was a typical of El Hefe, or if it was just really busy this past Saturday, but one thing's for sure--I have definitely experienced better at other bars in Old Town Scottsdale.
