| - For some wacky reason, I'd always wanted to stay at the Westin Lake Las Vegas. Yes, I know it's far from The Strip, but it always seemed like a unique pet friendly option in a town with few choices for those traveling with their furry friends. After spending the worst Thanksgiving of my life here, I really wish I hadn't given into my curiosity.
The problems began when my companions and I checked into our lake view room and were immediately greeted with a distinct smokey aroma. I know the casinos permit smoking indoors, but I had no idea Westin did, too. I called the front desk to inquire about it and was told there were, in fact, no smoking rooms on the property.
Outside on the lovely sitting area, I found a can overstuffed with cigarette butts. I understand if housekeeping couldn't get rid of the smell, but they should have at least disposed of the cigarette butts. I snapped a photo, took it to the front desk and asked to be changed to another room. Unfortunately, there were no similar rooms available.
Because I was traveling with a dog and another person, space and an extra bed were important. I opted for housekeeping to clean the room again. The maid left a complimentary bottle of green cleaner in case the smell returned. It didn't help. In the middle of the night, I awoke experiencing a coughing fit. The smell was in the bedding.
I went down to the front desk around 3 a.m. and begged to be changed to another room. The receptionist maintained there weren't any others with two beds. She said I could upgrade to a suite with a sleeper sofa for $50. I just wanted rest before Thanksgiving, so I agreed. The suite was great, mostly because it was smoke-less.
When I checked out, I was charged $50 extra each night for the suite. I argued and the manager agreed not to charge me the $29 resort fee. It's silly the hotel even had the audacity to charge a resort fee because the main pool, hot tub, gym and spa were all closed for renovations the week I was there, so it hardly classified as a "resort."
However, I did make use of the free kayak rentals on the lake and the attendant there was helpful. The staff in the restaurants were also very nice, if a little slow. I liked the Moorish style of the hotel. I just think allowing guests to check into an uninhabitable room should've never happened, and if it did, it should have been handled better.
I simply can't recommend Westin Lake Las Vegas. If you're traveling to the area with a pet, I believe the best option is Element Summerlin, another Starwood property, on the other side of Vegas. When I've stayed there, the staff has always been competent and friendly. The rooms have been clean and--most importantly--free of smoke.
