| - My husband and I recently made reservations at Savoy to celebrate our wedding anniversary at the recommendation of fellow Yelper, Sammy B. from the Burg. We are ever grateful for the recommendation.
Savoy, located in The Strip district, is a absolutely gorgeous restaurant and was thankfully very easy to locate. The menu has a nice selection of dishes to cater to a variety of diets for diners.
Initial Impressions:
After doing a bit of research and reading reviews on Yelp, I was able to develop some perspective on what to expect prior to our visit. I knew that Savoy was higher-end dining and had even suspected that it would be a bit pretentious as a result. But then I found out that they had a Groupon and I knew that could only mean one thing, they need business. Unfortunately, we couldn't use a Groupon because they are not valid on the weekends.
On the night of our visit, we were greeted by a very kind and personable host. The restaurant was mainly empty with the exception of a few people at the bar and about three other occupied tables. Despite our previous request for a private booth, when initially making the reservations, the hostess took us to one of those half booth / half chair seating arrangements (where you sit next to strangers). This is not what we wanted due to it being our anniversary. So my husband informed her of our request and we stood there and listened as the manager, hostess and servers loudly considered our request. This felt awkward and unwelcoming. As we stumbled deeper into the restaurant, the manager wished us a happy anniversary, but not before informing my husband that normally the booths are reserved for large groups. Keep in mind there were no more than four occupied tables on a Friday night in the entire place. End result, they worked it out and complied with our request, but not without first letting us know that they were doing us a favor. Ha!
Atmosphere:
It is very clear that the owners invested quite a bit of money into this building in order to turn it into its current magnificence. It is simply gorgeous. It could easily be in any major city around the world. It's sophisticated and contemporary design could compete with any similar establishment in someplace like Manhattan.
No other previous reviews mentioned this fact, so I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that Savoy is Black owned and operated. I didn't know the history of Savoy (or even of its existence for that matter) so after dining I decided to do a little further research in its history. Very interesting, Google it if you have a chance.
Service:
Our experience here and the service was definitely four stars alone. Our server was a young woman who went above and beyond to make sure that we had the perfect anniversary meal. She offered suggestions each step along the way. Again, she is single handedly the reason why I am giving Savoy four stars.
Food:
The food was good. We started with the calamari and shrimp appetizer. It was huge and easily large enough for four people to share. We could barely finish it after eating the bread that was served. The calamari was not the best that I've had. It was salty and did not taste fresh. I actually prefer the calamari at Joe's Crab Shack for a fraction of the price. The shrimp were perfect. I decided on the crab stuffed lobster tail and my husband had the red velvet waffles and fried chicken. My meal was excellent. The crab stuffing in the lobster tail was infused with lemon. The serving sizes were both filling. My husband said his fried chicken was very good, but overall meal was just as good as any other chicken and waffle meal that he's had over the years. The restaurant comped us Anniversary cupcakes for dessert which I thought was very sweet. For drinks, I ordered a glass of wine and my husband ordered two different speciality alcoholic beverages from the menu .
After dinner cocktails:
After we finished dinner, we went upstairs to check out the lounge and patio. By this time time, it was around 10:30pm on a Friday, there were very few people here (maybe 20). The dress code is slightly more casual upstairs.
The upstairs is also decorated beautifully. The indoor lounge features a full bar, TVs and seating. It is very comfortable. A waitress was available to take our orders, which was quite nice. The drink menu is the same upstairs as downstairs.
I liked Savoy. I've had a few days to decompress and reflect on my experience dining there and have come to the conclusion that it is a good restaurant that I wouldn't mind dining at again sometime in the future.
