  • I used to hate this place. I used to dramatically sigh looking for my luggage, roll my eyes when not getting it immediately on the arrival, text my friends with complains.... That was when princess Olga travelled locally and was looking for perfect everything in not-so perfect country of America ( outfits, boyfriends, food, grades, teachers)... Those days are long gone. I was thrown off my throne of High Expectations onto the cold ground of real life, got to my feet looked around and realized - if this world is not perfect, why would the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport be? First of all, airports are not meant to be the equivalent of your couch or local coffee shop. They are just the transient stops on the way from point A to point B. Second, you are thrown from your comfort zone of your fast decisions and purchases (your pants are falling without the belt but bra's metal is still making you an outlaw!) onto the common playground of terrorists and outlaws. Your dignity is gone along with your prohibited shampoo and oversized perfume (perishing in the garbage can, good bye, Channel, good bye). You are basically being kept hostage in the desert of misunderstanding, with $3 water and $10 sandwiches, but oh well... At least all Hopkins wants from you is the mutual acknowledgement of the unpleasant situation: you are their burden (no, not the customer), they will help you get where you want (hundred years ago it wasn't possible!), you better be prompt, apologetic, grateful and with carry-on of appropriate size! I love Hopkins with all my heart and simply by comparison to other monstrous airports: 1) Parisian Charles de Gaulle International Airport discriminates everyone by not speaking English ( C'est la vie mon ami), being openly hostile to foreigners ( as if they are rarity in INTERNATIONAL airport) , and by harassing passengers (once I witnessed in horror how the local French Police was undoing the cast of the elderly American tourist; the grandma with a broken limb (prototype of the terrorist I guess) was in tears and police was chuckling) 2) Russian Moscow Airports (all of them!) charge you a bloody murder for any food or luggage carts, speak broken English , delay flights mercilessly, and provide very doubtful security (robbery within airport is a common occurrence). They also don't discourage smoking in the bars of the airport and have very few non-smoking signs. 3) The airports I travelled through within America - Atlanta, New York, Chicago were also one hell of a disorganized mess- they don't announce change of gates in Chicago, they are rude to you in New York, they don't acknowledge you in Atlanta....plus does anybody really enjoy taking a train from one terminal to another? So yes, I will take my little comfortable Hopkins with convenient local shops where you can buy anything last minute, comfortable sitting areas, and polite customer service any minute over any airport in the world. Plus it's almost always empty which gives you that false pleasant reassurance that you are the only one in the world travelling and you do matter (which will be taken away from you literally on next connecting flight). Bon Voyage!
