| - Unfortunately, this Italian restaurant was one of those long time bookmarks that failed to work out. We were here on a late Saturday afternoon looking to grab a late lunch/early dinner. The restaurant was dim lit, compact, with a cramped seating arrangement and enclosed kitchen. There was a nice crowd on hand that contributed to a festive, family-oriented atmosphere.
We followed the reviewers' advice and asked for their complimentary bread, but were charged for it anyway. The Focaccia ($5) was not really focaccia by conventional wisdom. Rather, it was their pizza crust sliced into wedges served with a marinara sauce. The sauce was excellence and had great balance with thickness and rich flavors. The pizza crust was good too, but I wished the server would tell us in advance that the rest of our meal would be served with the same bread.
The Mussels and Calamari Fra Diavalo ($12) was the highlight of the meal. The size of the seafood was not particularly striking, but the spicy red sauce was phenomenal. It was served with the same focaccia bread. The bread was too frail to pick up the sauce, but in this case the soft chew was both pleasant and addictive.
The Margherita D.O.C. ($11) arrived with house made mozzarella, olive oil, basil, and tomatoes. In this instance, I was looking for a good crust that encompassed a crisp texture, and upon biting into it, was able to turn into a good flavorful chew. However, the pizza initially arrived completely burnt at the bottom, a sign that there was a lack of quality control when the food left the kitchen. The server was able to take it back, but didn't appear apologetic. Some reviewers also wrote about the burnt crust, so perhaps it is a practice that has been normalized for some time. Still, it was unacceptable to us.
The new pizza still had the same soft frail crust, except it was very soggy and over-salted. It was a very wet pizza from top to bottom. The server explained that it was a result of their house made mozzarella. Had we learned about this problem, we would not have come here in the first place. We only ate half of the pie and took the rest home. The taste of the crust was too repetitive for us to fully enjoy it at this point in the meal.
Their client-based wasn't diverse, and the servers seemed friendlier and at ease with the other customers we were surrounded with. We left disappointed from beginning to end. We will not be coming back.
