| - FINALLY... I was wondering when we'd ever get a big bright supermarket that specializes in Middle East and Mediterranean foods. Considering Metro owns majority of Adonis Groceries and we have a pretty big Middle East population in GTA West, I was so surprised it took forever for this Quebec transplant to cross over the provincial border.
This place opened to a HUGE swarm of people inside. They gutted the previous aging Metro and made it quite bright with huge floor to ceiling glass in the front wall. It really brightens the entire place. Parking is a nightmare as it's not well laid out and you have really crazy drivers in Mississauga. The layout of this place is very spacious. You don't have the tight crazy maneuvering that is required in most ethnic stores.
There is plenty of fresh groceries in addition to a HUGE assortment of cooked items. I'll start with the grocery section. Fresh green almonds... check! 5 types of parsley to make your family recipe of Taboule (tabbuleh?)... check! So many choices of fresh herbs in the middle of winter... check! And this is ONLY the first section of the grocery store. Suffice to say, they paid a lot of attention towards this area. There are lots of bins stocked full of very fresh and high quality vegetables and fruits. For the price, it's a touch more expensive than some other places but I would say it's on par to most good specialty grocery stores.
Between the fresh produce and the rest of the aisles, there's a special place for all those who are lovers of the Mediterranean cuisine or just general snacking. It takes up an entire aisle length and it has everything from bins of fresh LARGE whole roasted nuts (Pistachios from Iran... oh my!! and cashews 3/4 the size of my thumb), the most amazing assortment of fresh cheeses, and tons of deli items (more cold cuts and cheese). The labneh here is so creamy and rich, it almost feels like a dessert. The prices for Pont Neuf cheeses are REALLY affordable... I would say the price point for this area makes it a great place to stock on parties or those who just inhale cheese. The cost of the house brand of fresh cheese puts most discount stores to shame!
The next few aisles are dedicated to frozen and dairy section. It's like the UN council... a little bit of everything from each region. Wah Teep from China, spanokopita from Greece, McCain fries, pierogies... you get the gist. There's nothing here that screams out Mediterranean aside from the occasional frozen dinner that doesnt look too appeal. The prices are reasonable and I would say is cheaper than Metro.
Along the back of the store is a meat lovers paradise. It literally takes up about 3/4 the entire back ... there's a great butcher place where you can even see them cutting the sides into various cuts. They have a halal section as well. The fishmonger is pretty incredible. It has a lot of exotic fishes that you normally don't see in a grocery store (a whole Mahi Mahi including head and all) and a live tank of lobsters which included a behemoth 20+ lb one. They had U10 shrimp laid out... how often do you see that? They also had a lot of whole fish in addition to the filets. Every gill was bright red and eyes were clear. This definitely competes with all Chinese grocery stores for freshness (for now). As for the price, T&T still has them beat. Adonis is definitely more expensive.
Go into the snack area and grab fresh dates from Iran for $3.49 (such a steal) or Turkish Coffee for the cheapest price I've seen ($7 for 1 lb). The bakery was constantly bringing out fresh pita and it was such a wonderful smell. Also the baked sweets like Baklava was amazing. I HIGHLY recommend you just take a dozen and just let the fresh crispy sweetness with big pieces of pistachio just satisfy any sugary urges.
There are also tons of take out options as well. Tons of kabobs, halal chicken, lamb shashlik, and a large assortment of fresh vegetables. They even had a fresh fruit section that looked like something out of a high end frozen yogurt place in NYC (not our poor mock ups in GTA).
The cashiers were all quick and friendly. Actually... EVERYONE was friendly. The place was staffed so much that I think they probably had the same amount of employees as customers. Ok, that is probably an exaggeration but I really do believe they staff four times the amount of employees than the previous Metro they had there.
So why the 4 stars and not the 5.... NO CREDIT CARDS. Only cash and debit... booo!
