  • I wanted to love this place. Really, I did. I arrived early on a weekday, at 11 AM, to meet friends. The staff was busily preparing for the onslaught, and I was the first customer in the house. At that moment, it was peaceful and quiet. Then my friends arrived, along with a slew of other people, until there a pile of folks waited at the door. I ordered a Medicine Man to drink, and it was yummy. Once my friends arrived, we ordered an appetizer and our entrees. That's kind of where things went wrong. The appetizer--edamame dumplings--was so fresh and organic, that it had a clump of somebody's dark hair tangled up in the daikon radish garnish. Yuck. Double yuck. That sort of put me off the dumplings, which I had already tasted and found delicious, but couldn't eat after discovering the hair. (I didn't mention the hair to my friends, as one wasn't eating the dumplings and the other had already eaten her share. I thought it reasonable that only one of us was thoroughly disgusted.) I nervously awaited the entrees, wondering what surprises would be nestled inside my Mediterranean salad. Happily, the salad contained only fresh vegetables, nuts, and grilled chicken. No organic matter from another human being. I ate every bite, with no regrets. We even ordered dessert, and I inhaled a delicious, nutty banana-chocolate tart. In the 1990s, while in graduate school, I ate once or twice a week at a Mexican restaurant in the Haight. They made a delicious veggie burrito that was to die for, and I was addicted until the day I tongued a very long dark hair that was rolled up inside my lunch. I never went back, and every so often, I think of that hair in the burrito and shudder a bit. Would I eat at True Food again? I'd like to say maybe, but there is the pesky matter of The Hair. Just the thought of it grosses me out and sadly, eclipses the high points of the meal. I just don't recall Dr. Weil suggesting we eat human hair...
