| - I visited this establishment on April Fool's Day, 2013, to redeem a Groupon I had purchased over a year ago; needless to say, the promotional value had expired hehe The decor and layout was upscale and I was instantly impressed. I was seated at a corner table between the bar and the dining area which turned out to be a very high traffic area for the servers. There were people flying behind me throughout the evening, putting orders in at the bar and returning with drinks. I should have asked for a different seat.
I ordered the "Trancia di Salmone alla Senape," (Pan seared filet of salmon with shallots and a dijon mustard sauce) which, if you're looking at the menu is the 2nd item at the top on a right hand page. I pointed directly at the item I wanted and even attempted to pronouce it lol (that was fun!) 10-15 minutes later, the server returns and states he forgot to ask how I wanted the meat prepared. This should have been a red flag! However, I was taken aback as I've never had anyone ask me how I'd like my salmon cooked. I quickly replied, "Well done." He looked back at me, almost shocked, and asked, "So you don't want any red in it?" I replied, definitely not. 15 minutes later or so, the server returns and apologizes for the wait, stating the meat takes longer to prepare well done. I understood and was astonishingly patient.
My food finally arrives after 30 minutes or so, and I looked at the meat and it looked burnt. I thought, "Oh... this is what well done salmon looks like. " I began to eat and noticed the meat was good but definitely WAS NOT fish. I had no more than 3 bites and called the server back and politely asked, "Is this salmon?" He replied, "Oh, I thought you ordered the steak filet?" I quickly grabbed the menu and re-pointed to what I had previously ordered. He asked if I wanted to keep the food as he went back to order what I had asked for. I replied, "No thank you" and he took the filet mignon back.
Five minutes later, the owner is in my face. He was rude and was like, "How can you not tell the difference between salmon and steak?! I mean, their two different kinds of meat!" He was pissed and I would be too however the fact that he came at me accusatory and rude left a hugely sour taste in my mouth. He basically came across as if I had ordered one thing and then changed my mind once the food arrived. What was brought to me was way at the bottom of the same page I ordered from so there should have been no confusion. Had it not been for the server ADMITTING his fault, the owner would have continued to verbally assault me. I should have been more embarrassed by the situation, but, as they walked away, all I could do was laugh because I knew I had nothing to do with the mix up. It was the way the owner handled the situation that cemented my decision to never to eat at this establishment again, even though the food was delicious. 30 minutes later, my salmon arrived.
The icing on the cake was when they charged me AUTOGRATUITY, totalling $5.84. The service certainly did not warrant such a tip and the fact that the owner made NO attempt to remedy the hour long wait for my food or his rudeness was beyond poor customer service. In closing, if Groupon was giving away free $40 vouchers to eat at Gaetano's, I would, without question, have to decline. Good food must never trump great service; and if the poor service I received that night was an April Fool's joke, I definitely was not amused! You've been warned =)
