  • Did I enjoy the museum myself? Yes. Did I enjoy the guided tour with a group of middle school students? Not so much. My school took a recent field trip to the MIM and it may have been one of the driest and most boring tours I have ever experienced. Our docent did not seem to be aware of what sections of the museum would be of interest to a group of teenagers. Instead, we were only shown the areas of musical instruments around the world. Needless to say, this was not very exciting to our students. It's quite frustrating to be told, "In that room is where we have John Lennon's piano, but unfortunately, that's not on today's tour". It seemed to be a great tease to encourage us to return again. If we paid money once to see the museum, why would we not gain access to all areas of the museum? Over and over again, we were turned down. No, we could not check out the gift shop. No, we could not see John Lennon's piano. No, we could not read about all of the different guitars. Etc. It was disappointing. A musical instrument museum should encourage students to become interested in music. I was disappointed that their educational tour was not geared toward teaching youth to appreciate music. I give the MIM three stars due to the fact that museum itself is quite impressive. The variety of instruments and information given is pretty remarkable. They provide headsets for visitors to walk around with and listen to the different music (another thing that was not provided for our students). There is also a room where you can play some of the instruments which is great for kids (we were allowed a mere 10 minutes in there). Overall, the museum is great, but I would not recommend the guided tour. It was extremely disappointing and not worth the money. They have a lot of work to do in the educational department...we will not be scheduling another field trip unless there are serious changes made.
