  • After walking around Cows on the Concourse we decided to finally check out The Tipsy Cow (how appropriate, after all). As we walked up to the door we got to admire all of the delicious food people were eating at the outdoor seating, and it was 2pm already so I was ready for a large meal and a beer. We enter the doors and we're immediately greeted by cow decor everywhere, love it. The whole thing just screamed "THIS IS WISCONSIN." We were seated shortly with only a brief wait and dropped off at the general seating area of the restaurant (away from the bar) by the hostess. I began to peruse the tap list, and I was immediately disappointed. All of the buzz that I had heard about the tap-list at Tipsy Cow had generally been praise worthy. Unfortunately, the list I was seeing was targeted at burnt hops IPA drinkers. The only malty delicious beer on beverage was a Left-Hand Stout (which I love but have had many times). I ended up settling on a bottle due to the lack of diversity on tap. Our party put in an order of cheese curds, which arrived with our drinks. The cheese curds were heavily breaded and luke-warm. Overall, they were fairly average. I just wasn't impressed, as I prefer a lighter breading, gooey cheese, and a warmer curd inside. Fortunately, the curds were not greasy at all! For the main course I ordered a grilled turkey and Havarti sandwich. The sandwich was okay, but it was nothing stellar. It definitely had too much meat on it and not enough cheese/other dressings. It looked like there was about an inch worth of packaged lunch meat on it. I ordered a side of zucchini chips with the sandwich, and I enjoyed them quite a bit. The chips were cut a little thicker and the breading wasn't too heavy. I appreciate that the chips were not soggy and overcooked. They actually tasted like zucchini, I would recommend them over the cheese curds for a side here. My friend ended up order alligator bites. I can't speak much for the quality of the bites, as I only have had alligator one other time. I appreciate that Tipsy Cow has an interesting menu item to choose, but I would not recommend it unless you know what to expect. Alligator tends to be a very tough meat, and that quality really came through in the bites. My friend couldn't finish the side, even with the help of my wife and me. Despite the average food, I think we will return to Tipsy Cow on occasion. I just do not feel blown away by anything specific on the menu. The food is just what I would expect from an average bar in Madison.
