  • I've lived in Pittsburgh for the last 10 years. I've eaten at Casbah dozens and dozens of times. In the past, it was, if not the best, then one of the top 2-3 restaurants in town. Now, I've had several "meh" experiences here. It's not just that I think the restaurant scene is stronger and more competitive (it is) but I think Casbah has declined some from their best. Maybe if it's your first time to the restaurant, the menu will be interesting and exciting. But it very rarely changes substantially. They claim to print the menus each day, but it would still be nice to get a highlight of "oh, this is new" - it seems to retain largely the same entrees. My wife and I went last weekend for her birthday. The beet salad was fresh and tasty. I tried the tomato watermelon bisque, which sounded interesting but lacked something, somehow. I still can't put my finger on it - perhaps it was too smooth and there wasn't contrast? I had the duck, which was excellent. My wife had the swordfish with roasted greens. She made a face mid-way through the meal after she tasted the side, saying it was "the most bitter, smoky and yet salty" combination she could ever imagine. (I'll note that she's an adventurous eater, so that's quite a statement.) What troubled us wasn't the dish - that happens sometimes. The waitress, to her credit, asked if they could do anything and ended up taking the entrĂ©e off the bill. But overall, service was really meh. Nobody seemed to smile. There wasn't an "oh, we're sorry, we hope you'll come again" kind of statement. The waiter at the next table stepped on my foot - hard - without any apology as he seemed in a rush. Look, if you've read this far, I'm clearly being picky. But if you go to Casbah, you want a special experience. It's supposed to be a top-notch restaurant. I've gone a few times in the last 2-3 years and we consistently haven't gotten "special." Good luck Casbah - I hope you get back to your peak.
