  • I found myself headed down to Old Town (reside in N. Scottsdale) tonight to visit a friend. Since we were both in the mood for sushi I consulted the wisdom of yelp to help me figure out where to go. All I asked for was halfway decent sushi (no RA) and a happy hour; voila Pearl Sushi. So we meandered over and here's what I found... First off, it took a little to find it. I thought it would be visible from Drinkwater but either I missed it or it's not. Either way, I found it after a drive around the block so no big deal. We arrived around 8:30pm and pretty much what I suspected, very busy. Now this is Old Town Scottsdale so I pretty much knew what kind of crowd was going to be waiting inside and it certainly wasn't the Coach house regulars. Pearl is a pretty small joint trying too hard to be current and hip. I'm cool with small, matter of fact some of the swankiest joints I've been in were small and cozy but where Pearl has gone wrong is with their approach of cramming in as many table as they can. When you have to ask people to move so you can cram into the seat on your two top and then have to deal with their chair rocking your table every time they move something is wrong. The food- it was good. It wasn't mind blowing but it was a heck of lot more palatable than RA. I don't recall the names of what we ordered outside of the fishsticks (that was on recommendation of the waiter so I said sure, had I know they were fried or whatever they were I would have passed), a spicy tuna and then a few other rolls and the garlic edamame. I'm not a fan of cream cheese in sushi so guess what people, I ordered it without. Gasp! One thing I see a lot of on yelp are people complaining about cream cheese in their sushi. Order it without people. Like I said, the food was pretty good for sure. 3 stars Service - what can I say, it was prompt and good. Within 30 seconds of walking in a hostess greeted us and sat us and then our waiter (I wish I remembered his name) brought water over and dropped the menu within a few minutes. I didn't expect that based on the reviews here and the fact that it was packed so nice surprise. Our waiter who's name I still don't remember was great. He kept the mood light cracking jokes about his weight and the tightness of our table, kept the drinks coming and was on top of everything all night. He gets 5 stars for sure. Atmosphere- this is where I give really low ratings but like I said, I expected it. I'm not a fan of the "scottsdale crowd" and the deep v-necks were out in full force. For the 45 minutes we were there we got to overhear the Jersey Shore brahs next to us go on and on about strippers. For once I found myself wishing the music were actually louder so I couldn't hear anyone talk. Pearl definitely is not a douchebag free zone. 1 star So in summary- Food- 3 stars Service- 5 stars Atmosphere- 1 douchebag star
