| - Cowboys is like the Big Bad of the Calgary Scene. It's the bar that most out of towners have heard of, the one where the ask with baited breath if its true that its doors are home to the hottest women in Calgary. It's the place where Prince Harry got a little naughty and made international headlines. And more than being the stuff of legend, it is totally representative of Calgary's bipolar location between city and wannabe maverick cowtown.
The old Cowboys was the stompin' grounds of my younger self. I admit I took a little while to warm to it. The first time I went, I was shocked when the top 40 hits I had been groovin to switched to country and a line dance began. I was even more appalled when the music switched back to hip-hop and the line dancing continued. LINE DANCING TO HIP-HOP?! I eventually overcame my confusion and spent a lot of time dancing and getting into shenanigans.
The bar is definitely a meat market, old or new. Tons of girls decked out in their finest clubwear, guys with collars in full pop, and the occasional t-shirt. It is casual yet dressed up, young without being underage, and full of pretty. Drinks are pretty expensive, but some nights have crazy specials.
The new location is lacking some of the feel of the old locale. I've been a grand total of three times since they moved, but it feels more like Coyotes (the bar it used to be) than the Cowboys I remember.
I agree with Moez entirely about the negative rep of the bar. I happened into some free Bif Naked tickets and the venue was Cowboys. I felt a little cruel when I played "spot who shouldn't be here" with my friend, but I think this illustrates Moez's point perfectly. Cowboys has a demographic, and if you fit into it, you'll like Cowboys. If you're a scenester, you probably know you're going to hate it. Same if you are a goth. I always felt it was mutually repelling on both sides - neither one wants the other.
But if you like to dance and look at pretty people and generally have a good time, Cowboys is the place. I would have given the old location four stars, but the new location just doesn't have the same energy as the old place so it gets three.
