| - chocolats privilège is a small maison du chocolat located at the awe-inspiring marché jean-talon.
their truffles are good, and locally (i'm based in new york), i would compare them flavor and quality-wise to jacques torres chocolates. aside from some typical flavor combinations, they offer some that are unique like szechuan pepper, and citrus-basil. there are also several different single origin chocolate truffles.
what makes me want to give this place four stars are the chocolate spreads they have. the choco-noisettes douceurs à tartiner is like a super high end nutella. this chocolate hazelnut spread is so good i feel bad for mentioning it in the same sentence as nutella, but a point of reference is needed.
another spread was even better: the Érable-Fleur de sel. i bought one jar on sunday, consumed the jar by the spoonful that evening, and on monday i drove all the way across town to stock up on this before leaving this beautiful city. i won't say how many jars i picked up, because i'm not into publicly embarrassing myself. i will say that this caramel fleur de sel had the best balance of salty and sweet that i have ever come across, and i *still* feel like i didn't pick up enough.
the only disappointment was their chocolate bread. it looked so dark and dense and rich but, appearances were deceiving, and it didn't taste as much of chocolate as was expected.
they even carry discs of couverture for baking, from all the major chocolate houses. lots of single origin discs as well.
the prices are reasonable, and the people that work here are nice. i'll be returning every time i visit montreal so i can squirrel away jar after jar of chocolate and caramel goodness.
