| - What can I say that others haven't already? I'm not sure, except that you have to try it! Kayaking is like cycling--it's relaxing, yet strenuous exercise at the same time--only it's on the water, which makes it even better! This is certainly one of the best ways to take in awesome views of downtown PGH from a new perspective--whether you're a tourist or a local, you'll certainly find something new to appreciate!
CM and I went out for a jaunt in a tandem kayak today, and it was loads of fun. I'd been before, but not for two years--Kayak PGH was my first experience kayaking. He, on the other hand, had been kayaking previously, but not in PGH, so I knew he'd enjoy it. The weather was just perfect--sunny and warm with a breeze--and the time that we went (4pm) was ideal, since the midday heat had cooled off.
We spent about 1.5 hours on the river, and decided to head downstream first, since I'd never kayaked in that direction before. We checked out the Point from up close, and then paddled over alongside the submarine at the Carnegie Science Center. Then, we headed upstream as far as the railroad bridge (sadly, no train happened to go by as we were underneath), and turned around and headed back. It was strenuous enough to get in some good exercise and to work up a nice appetite, but relaxing enough to let us enjoy the scenery. The only part that stressed CM out was when another boat happened to go by, since the wake rocked our boat!
Since CM signed up for a Venture Outdoors membership today, we received the discounted rate of $16.50/hr for our kayak, so our total came out to around $28 w/ tax. Additionally, they will send him a voucher for $5 off, which we plan to put towards our next kayaking experience, which will most likely be at North Park. Finally, as a pro tip, you can park free of charge for up to 4 hrs. in the recreational parking lots along River Ave. In sum, we had a great time, and look forward to going kayaking again soon!
