# To the Budget Traveler: This is completely FREE and a must see if you are traveling through Cleveland.
When I planned my trip to the monument I thought that this was going to be rather small and uneventful. After all, this president was only in office for 200 days before he was assassinated. I was in for a big surprise. This monument is enormous and humbling. I have never seen anything like it.
First, I went downstairs to see the caskets to pay my respects to the president and his family. Then I slowly climbed the tower, taking in the beautiful artwork throughout the monument. At the top I found a spectacular view of Cleveland.
I met a wonderful volunteer named William Spencer on the ground floor. He was kind and knowledgable. If you have a moment to speak with him then I highly suggest it. He was open to answer all of my questions about the history of the monument and president Garfield and I had many.
After you visit the Garfield monument, I suggest that you walk around the cemetery and explore the lavish way in which some of the nation's leaders and wealthy are buried. I was particularly astonished to find that the Rockefeller family has an area in the cemetery with a giant obelisk marking it.
