| - I almost didn't go to District. Almost. The maitre d' over the phone was pompously insistent on reservations...which on a very nondescript early Sunday evening seemed a tad preposterous. Huh, really? Okay, he's going to squeeze us in. "Ten bucks says that place is EMPTY when we get there." No takers. I would have won too. When we walk into the almost entirely empty District I had to hold back my laugh when the same maitre d' sort of snobbishly queries our reservation status.
I have a really low tolerance for pretense. So, the whole evening started off on the wrong foot...but it did quickly improve. Every other staff member we encountered was great: good attitude; helpful. The ambiance is really nice inside District too. And on Sunday evenings they were having half off bottles of wine...well you don't need to tell me twice!
The food was way better than I was expecting too. Tell me how this place in the desert somehow managed to have the BEST Calamari appetizer I've ever had (...and I'm from the Pacific coast!) Amazing. The Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection and rivaled, dare I say out-classed, many dedicated steakhouses. Amazing. Everything on our table was great! The Short Ribs, wow. Oh, actually the Scallops were too salty. So, ALMOST everything was amazing. Still, overall, a very good gastronomical experience.
Besides the needlessly snooty maitre d, everything about my visit to District was top-notch. I can't wait to return. Hopefully the management will have a good talking-to with the maitre d' before then.
