I've bought many a loaf of bread and other baked goods at Blackbird in the past year or so. The vast majority of the bread I bought there has been of excellent quality and that's why I kept coming back, despite not living in the area.
The past couple trips haven't been as good as each time I've been unimpressed with the quality of the bread. The first was a sourdough loaf that my wife purchased and had sliced onsite. Once she got it home, we realized that the bottom of the loaf was burnt and that influenced the taste of the whole loaf. I understand that my wife probably should have checked the bread, but if a loaf of bread is burnt on the bottom it shouldn't be put out.
The last trip we bought a ploughman's loaf and had it sliced on site again and put in a freezer bag. When we tasted it, it had a freezer-burnt taste to it, leading me to guess as to whether or not the loaf had been frozen at some point in its lifecycle (not at our end).
Overall, I still give them 3/5 stars because other items have been good and we've not had issues up til now so we'll likely give them another shot. That being said, if we get another loaf of bread that doesn't live up to our lofty expectations, we'll probably start looking elsewhere.
