DISCLAIMER- I realize everyone's mouth is different and some may need less or more attention. I am only rating going by my experience AND MORE IMPORTANTLY my previous dentists.
I waited until a second visit to make up my mind about Uptowne Dental. I wanted to like it. It's near home. But it does not compare with my last dentist.
Some of the issues include:
1. This office does not bill insurers directly. They can call your insurance provider and get estimates, and they can put a claim through for you if you need them to, but they will charge you a full balance. You must pay then wait for your insurer to refund you. But archaic. Many dentist offices save you the trouble.
2. My hygienist was kind (Simone) but slow to set up. When you're paying by the hour, you don't want someone to only start scraping at your teeth 17 mins into an appointment. Even worse- everything was painful. Not a 10 but a 5 or 6 kind of pain and I am not accustomed to that. This is not my first rodeo. It may have to be my last at Uptowne.
3. There isn't a conversation with the patient about therapy. I booked a cleaning. Two visits later, they were still doing scaling and hadn't even started to the real cleaning (polish, recall exam). I had to keep asking what the plan/delay was (as I am charged by the hour. Just saying). And sure enough they wanted me in for a third scaling appointment. They wouldn't confirm if it would be my last, just that I would be covered.
So just cause I'm covered means do everything slowly and waste my time and coverage? I don't think so.
I've also worked in health and dental insurance so I don't like feeling like I'm taken advantage of. You should be able to get several units of scaling done along with a cleaning and polishing in one visit. He'll, some even throw in whitening products to go.
The patient should be advised of a plan before hygienists and dentists set out. Manage our expectations. Treat us like intelligent beings. We should have a say in what goes into our mouths and out of our pockets.
I RECOMMEND- finding another dentist office if you're sensitive to pain and budget-conscious
EXTRA TIP- Anna is the friendliest of all their receptionists. Another that shall not be named tried to give me attitude on my first visit for being less than 5 mins late. Way to make a first impression.
